There’s nothing quite like the moment a fresh bouquet arrives — the color, the scent, the little lift it gives your whole day. But that magic fades fast if the flowers aren’t cared for properly. At Gettava Boutique Flowers, we want every arrangement you bring home (or receive) to stay beautiful for as long as possible. Here are our top tips, straight from the studio.
1. Trim the Stems Before You Do Anything Else
As soon as your flowers arrive, snip about an inch off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. Use sharp scissors or shears — dull blades crush the stem and block water flow. Cutting at an angle also increases the surface area for water absorption, which means happier, hydrated blooms.
Pro tip: Re-cut stems every 2–3 days to keep them drinking well.
2. Choose the Right Vase — and Clean It First
A vase that’s been sitting in the cupboard can harbor bacteria that shortens your flowers’ lifespan. Wash it with warm, soapy water before use. As for size: pick a vase that supports the stems without overcrowding them, giving each bloom room to breathe.
3. Feed Them (Yes, Flowers Need Food Too)
That little packet of flower food that comes with your bouquet isn’t just packaging filler — it’s a mix of sugar (energy), acidifier (to balance pH), and antibacterial agents that keep the water clean. No packet on hand? A homemade mix of 1 tablespoon sugar, 2 tablespoons white vinegar, and a few drops of bleach per quart of water works in a pinch.
4. Keep Them Cool and Out of Direct Sunlight
Flowers last longest in a cool spot away from direct sun, heating vents, and ripening fruit (fruit releases ethylene gas, which speeds up wilting). A spot around 65–72°F, out of drafts, is ideal.
5. Change the Water Every Other Day
Fresh water means fewer bacteria and better hydration. Every time you change it, give the vase a quick rinse and re-trim the stems. This simple habit alone can add several extra days to your bouquet’s life.
Bonus: Our Favorite Long-Lasting Blooms
If you’re shopping for a bouquet that goes the distance, ask us about:
- Chrysanthemums — can last up to 3 weeks with proper care
- Carnations — a classic for a reason; sturdy and long-blooming
- Orchids — elegant and impressively resilient
- Alstroemeria — often overlooked, but incredibly hardy
